Support is at the heart of what a doula does.

We support from the very first moment that we are contacted by a potential client. They want to know- how can you support me in what I’m going through? Will you be there in the middle of the night when I call you, confused or anxious and wondering if this is really “it”? Can I know that you’ll support me with information I can trust or guidance that makes me feel empowered and confident? Will you support my choices no matter what route I take?
Doulas begin building trust through support from the moment we connect with a new couple or set of expectant parents or birthing woman. A bond forms- something that is truly unique and amazing and one that lasts forever. Pregnancy and birth is a time of such vulnerable change and those that support it are there for many intimate and intense moments.

But, doulas are not alone in what they do. Today I want to honor another supporting role that exists in our lives- the one of our best friends. Everyone has one. You know exactly who I mean. The one who supports you through all your most dramatic moments. The one who picks you up and holds you when you don’t feel like you can. The one with whom you share all your most hilarious moments. The one who can say she knew you, and loved you, even through your “awkward” phase. My best friend is an old friend, who I’ve known for almost 20 years now. She can put me in my place like nobody’s business and we can catch up without even speaking at a quick trip to the spa. She’s always been there, even when life gets so busy that phone calls, even texts, become few and far between and even when hundreds of kilometers separate us. I look forward to having her support me for 20 more years and I plan to do the same for her!

Vive les best friends!

doula contest for best friends

Me and my bestie, Jess at my wedding 6 years ago! I’m telling you- if your best friend will wear purple satin for you, then you know she’s for real.

Now, I want YOU to tell me about your bestie. In 250-500 words, explain why your best friend plays the best supporting role in your life. What makes them special? Have they ever come through for you when you needed it most? Dragged you out of a rut and gotten you back on your feet? Include a photo with your submission so we can see how amazing you are. Contest is open until April 15th, 2015 at 9pm.

The winner and their best friend will each receive a $25 gift certificate for DAVIDsTEA. Then you can go grab a chai together and talk about how you’re both so awesome you won a best friend’s contest!
