“You’re going to cloth diaper? Isn’t that going to be so time consuming? Don’t you have to soak poopy diapers in water and have your whole house smell like urine? Doesn’t it use up so much water and you’ll spend all your days washing diapers instead of taking care of your baby? Isn’t cloth diapering something we don’t have to do anymore? Why would you want to use cloth diapers?!?!”

I have both said these things about cloth diapers and had them said to me.

About 13 years ago, when I was childless and totally clueless about all things baby, my sister was expecting her first. She planned to cloth diaper. We all poo-pooed the idea and told her she was nuts. In the end, she chose not to continue with cloth diapers, probably because we all made fun of her and came up with every reason in the book as to why it was the WORST idea ever.

Fast forward to 6 years ago and I, pregnant with MY first, decided that I was going to cloth diaper. Cue the negative comments from friends and family and the eye rolls from people I spoke to about it. It seemed like only a few people I knew cloth diapered. But, I was drawn to it and so, like with many things relating to baby gear, I fell down the rabbit hole of cloth diapering.

The reasons people give for cloth diapering are always different. Eco-friendly and cost-effective are usually high up on the list.

My husband’s reason: He didn’t like the chemicals in disposable diapers and preferred something more natural on our baby’s bum.

My reason: they were cute and came in really awesome colours.

So, I spent a TON of time researching all the different kinds and checking out the different styles and finally settled on a style and brand that I liked. They were called AppleCheeks and at the time they were a relatively new brand on the market. They had great colours, a cute design and best of all, they were a local company.

A stack of Applecheeks cloth diapers

I ordered an entire stash of size 1 covers in every colour. I carefully washed and folded them and then waited for my baby to arrive so he could poop and pee in them. Crazy, right?

Not at all! My son fit perfectly into them right away since he was a bigger baby, so we used them from our first day home. He never had a diaper rash, they were so easy to stuff, and since he was breastfed I just tossed them directly into the wash and let my washing machine do the rest.

As time went on, I won’t lie- we occasionally used disposable diapers here and there. Like with anything in life, it’s never a black and white choice. But, we always preferred our cloth diapers and used them again when our second arrived!

So guess what? AppleCheeks and I have arranged to do a giveaway of a Size 1 Little Bundle (cover +insert) in the colour of your choice! See below for how to enter. Winner will be chosen on November 20th- good luck!
