There’s always something out there to freak new and expectant parents out, isn’t there?
The latest is mass-paranoia and hysteria regarding Huggies brand baby wipes that people are claiming have shards of glass. Scary Mommy wrote a great article about Huggiesgate.
Everyone take a breath. If these wipes did indeed have glass particles in them I think we would have figured this out a long time ago (hello, bleeding baby butts all over North America maybe??).
I think the bigger question that needs to be asked is, “Am I choosing the right products for my baby?” because this is where all the fear and anger is stemming from really.
As parents, we are all trying to do our best in whatever way works best for us. I currently use Huggies wipes and LOVE them because they often go on sale, and they don’t smell like they are covered in baby powdered scent like the other major brand. But, I understand buying them that they don’t have the best ingredients and aren’t great for sensitive skin.
I haven’t always used these commercial brand wipes. No. No. No! Back when I was a soon-to-be first time mother, I wanted only THE BEST for my baby’s bum. I bought cute little cloths and found a great homemade wipe recipe online and made my own solution so that none of that evil liquid ever had to touch my perfect baby’s bottom. This actually worked really well when my son was a baby since we were breastfeeding and using cloth diapers and everything could just get tossed in the wash all at once without a care. After a while though, the laundry and poop took over and we switched over to disposables.
I know most parents want to choose the perfect thing for their baby- rightly so. Nobody wants to put chemicals and crappy products on their baby, just like most of us like to buy products that are healthy for us and good for our bodies. So, read the ingredients. Weigh the risks and benefits and make the choice that makes sense for you.
With anything in parenting it is never BLACK and WHITE. You can breastfeed, cloth diaper and use disposable wipes. You can be a babywearer and sleep train. You can hire a doula and have an epidural. You can buy organic and go back to work early.
Now, put away your magnifying glass and focus on something important like – what colour to paint the nursery or what essentials you might be missing for the first few weeks after your baby is born.
